This master’s thesis aims to make ultrasound technology more intuitive and accessible for general practitioners (GPs) inexperienced with ultrasound, in rural areas of Norway. Sintef is developing an AI capable of identifying and measuring abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in real-time ultrasound images. My task was to design a user interface (UI) that could provide real-time
AI-based guidance, feedback during the AAA examination.

Based on insight gathered from interviews and observations of experts and end users, the UI and supporting workflow was created. The AAA examination workflow for experts, was analysed and adapted to better suit the AI and the needs of inexperienced users. The Step-by-Step guidance was designed and iterated multiple times, to improve clarity and prevent errors. Various dynamic UI elements were designed to make the AI able to communicate its needs to the user in real time, to help the user make decisions, and to make the user more confident while performing the procedure.

One of the results, a concept based on an ideal scenario, will act as a future vision for Sintef to take inspiration from. While the other result, a fully functional prototype, will be further developed and used in Sintef’s still ongoing research project.
