This project explores how temporary installations can create social gathering spaces at festivals. The thesis investigates how a modular furniture system can generate social, visual, and functional structures in temporary festival environments. The solution consists of two curved modules – both with a 30-degree arc, but with different radii and directions.

The modules act as both furniture and spatial installation. They invite people to sit down, meet, rest, or observe. Textile surfaces and open constructions allow for partial transparency, offering a balanced experience of being both enclosed and part of the surroundings. Variations in height, direction, and rhythm create a sense of depth and movement across the landscape. Safety has been a key concern throughout, with robust materials and construction built to withstand both weather and crowds.

The structure allows for both open and closed configurations, forming alcoves, circular gathering points, and elongated organic landscapes. This gives organizers flexibility to adapt the system to different situations and spatial constraints – and to both allow and guide crowd flow through the area. To fully utilize the spatial and visual potential, multiple modules should be used together. The organic and dynamic system has been specifically adapted to NEON’s parking lot – a space characterized by flat ground and surrounding buildings – to break up the rigidity and create landscape and atmosphere where there was previously none. The installation is designed to draw attention and introduce a strong spatial identity.

The system is designed so that the festival crew can easily manage assembly, disassembly, and decoration themselves. It functions as a creative framework, where the organizers can experiment with different setups and expressions, and easily replace or update the decorations from year to year. This supports ownership, sustainability, and visual variation over time.
