Never has there been more research published on what lifestyle and diet choices support health and longevity. However, on a global level, we see an increase in chronic illnesses linked to diet and lifestyle. Growing evidence points to the gut microbiome playing an important role. Could a more interactive and personal approach to health education be part of the solution?

The interactive exhibition “Tarmdetektiven” aims to inform visitors about the important relationship between the gut, bacteria and how this affects our overall health. The science exhibition is designed for preteens aged 8-12 and is set in a science centre focusing on health. Visitors follow the storyline as “gut doctors,” learn about the intestine and bacteria, diagnose patients and learn how our daily choices affect our health.

Through an exploratory and iterative design process, I have developed five installations that encourage curiosity and embodied learning, through tactile interaction. My goal is to inspire visitors to engage in experience-based exploration of bacteria and learn how they take residency in our bodies and influence our health. The aim is to contribute to increased health literacy by introducing visitors to health topics in a more appealing, personal and playful way. The exhibition encourages health discussions to continue after visitors leave the science centre, reminding them to make healthy choices in their everyday life.

Who knew the gut could be so fun and interesting?

Come dive into the gut at Vitensenteret in Trondheim from June 12 to June 26, 2026.
