The 4X3AMP40 guitar amplifier is different. It is designed with a deep love for music culture, yet it approaches the aesthetics it - occasionally - embodies with unsentimental detachment. As a reaction to a self-important, archaic, and monotonous product category, the 4X3AMP40 breaks both technically and expressively with many of the established truths about what a guitar amplifier is supposed to be. Drawing inspiration from architecture, disposable packaging, and industrial machinery, it keeps itself at an arm's length from an amplifier scene otherwise flooded with faux leather vinyl and brass fittings .
The 3X4AMP40 doesn’t look like an ordinary speaker—because it isn’t. It is based on a technology called Distributed Mode Loudspeaker (DML), and as part of my master’s thesis in product design, I developed a paper pulp diaphragm that vibrates to produce sound. The frame is constructed from 3mm aluminum, bent lengthwise into a trapezoidal profile for increased strength.
At a broader level, this master’s thesis explores honesty in product design. Through creative exploration of materials, form, and production processes, the concept of honesty has been approached from multiple angles. The 4X3AMP40 stands as a representation of a visual language, a technique, and a function that I believe to be honest.
